Ford has announced a greater investment in autonomous vehicle R&D alongside plans to introduce a fleet of thousands of self-driving vehicles by 2021. According to the company, it’ll have thousands of autonomous vehicles on the road as part of car-sharing and ride-hailing services.

It is growing its Silicon Valley research center to 300 employees and increasing the number of vehicles there from 30 to 90.

Ford’s timeline, which assumes government regulations don’t stand in the way of autonomous vehicle rollouts, is in-line with timelines from Google, Mercedes, and other automakers.

Through various investments and its own R&D, Ford has positioned itself to move forward with self-driving cars.
