Russ Salakhutdinov, a researcher at Carnegie Mellon University, will now lead an AI team at Apple. He’ll still be a professor at the university, but he’ll also be spending time as “Director of AI Research” at the company. Along with announcing his position, Salakhutdinov tweeted he is looking for experts to join his team.
According to a linked job posting, Apple wants to hire people who have experience in deep learning, computer vision, machine learning, reinforcement learning, optimization, and data mining.
One of the most obvious applications for Salakhutdinov’s expertise is in improving Siri, though it’s possible Apple is working on other AI-involved projects.
